Night Terrors

The past few nights my McKenna has been waking up about 30 min - 1 hr after I put her to bed just crying and crying and her hair is sweaty. She throws her head back and arches her back while I'm holding her like she wants me to put her down. Then I put her down and she cries even more. Nothing I do calms her down and it last for about 15-20 minutes. I'm not exactly sure if that is what it is, but from what I've read online she has most of the traits for night terrors. It said online that they have their eyes open, but hers are mostly closed. But other than that one point it seems that this is what is happening. Its very frustrating. Tonight was much better than the last few nights. After her episode she would be wide a wake and wouldn't want to go back to sleep for way to long. But tonight after she calmed down she went back to sleep about 10 minutes later and I haven't heard a peep from her. I've found that giving her ice chips in a plastic bag with a little hole cut in the end makes her stop crying. I'm not sure if this is helping or hurting but its makes her stop crying and really in the moment that seems to be my main goal. Does anyone know why this happens or anything I can do to stop it?? I need it to stop! Please help!!

Wow Meems. I don't know what to tell you. My kids never had that. Just keep reading online or talk to her pediatrician next time she goes in. They most likely will be able to give you some more information. I hear they grow out of it though. My sweet little niece!!!

Tyler had this same problem. He seems to have outgrown it now, but its awful when it happens. There is nothing you can do in the moment. You just have to wait until they wake up. Believe me, we tried. But our pediatrician says it comes from being over stimulated during the day. Which turned out to be true for us. So just do whatever you can to make the time before bedtime as relaxing as possible. Kids this age are spending a lot of time exploring and learning new things. It can be too much some days. If it is night terrors (which is what it kind of sounds like), then some quiet time before bed might help. If its not night terrors it could be that she is working on some teeth that you can't see or feel yet. Colby went through that just last week and then bam... new teeth. I hope you can get something figured out, so you can get some sleep too! Good luck.

Peter had night terrors when he was little. It was the freakest thing! There is nothing you can do to help, they just have to stop on their own. Thankfully, it doesn't last too long!

Yeah.... Bennett had them too.. they are the worst. From what I understand there isn't really anything you can do except make sure they don't hurt themselves. If the ice thing works I would keep moving w/that... at least there is something to help her calm down! If I remember correctly it didnt last longer than a month or so and it was just on/off. Good luck!! Liz
